Prison year shortened to 9 months

[CNN]

The prison year in Lebanon has become officially 9 months as of yesterday. I don’t understand the logic behind such a decision. If a guy is sentenced for 20 prison years, he gets 15 effectively?

If our prisons are in a bad shape and over-crowded, we build new ones, we don’t free criminals earlier!!

If he will learn his lesson in 20 years, most probably he will learn the same lesson in 15 years. And spend the 5 years countributing to his society (although I doubt anyone gets out of prison with better morals and ethics)

    najib,

it is almost standard that people who have been jailed; except the ones for life in prison; become eligible for parole after serving 2/3 of their sentence. Off course each jurisdiction or country have their own laws. I gather that Lebanon is trying to reform their system too…

I think its okay to get in 15 years.. maybe put in the release details like they have to do a year of community service etc. It’d essentially be like parole.

It’s an international law, they reduce the week ends 108 days per years approx. 3 months, actually what is worst in Lebanon, is that you can spend 1 year or more in Jail before getting to your trial and your sentence can be few days only.
