I shared this picture before knowing that the project wasn’t approved by Beirut’s municipality and I didn’t pay much attention to where the lane is. Having said that, I do agree with Beirut’s Mayor that the bike path cannot be placed in the middle of the sidewalk. The bike lane should be either put on the road, but I am not sure if that’s feasible or it can be moved to be next to the trees (like this) and therefore leave a decent space for pedestrians to walk and enjoy the sea view.
We do need bike lanes in Lebanon and I strongly support these initiatives but they need to be well executed.
Update: Beirut’s Mayor Bilal Hamad said no permission was given to draw the bike lane and that it is against the law.
