The International Court of Justice issued a press release today announcing that Judge Nawaf Salam was elected President for a term of three years. Salam had become a member of the Court in 2018 after having served as a Permanent Representative of Lebanon to the United Nations in New York from July 2007 to December 2017.
Following this announcement, Salam tweeted the following:
“My election as President of the International Court of Justice is a major responsibility in achieving international justice and upholding international law. The first thing that also comes to my mind at this moment is my constant concern for my city, Beirut, to return to the laws, and for us to succeed as Lebanese in establishing the rule of law in our country and for justice to prevail among its people.”
Nawaf Salam is a Lebanese diplomat, jurist and academic. He was also a potential candidate to become Lebanon’s prime minister.
