The deadline to register for the 2026 parliamentary elections is November 20, and the number of registered expat voters so far is drastically lower than in 2022. According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, barely 55,000 expats have registered so far, compared to over 200,000 in 2022.

This sharp decline is alarming and can be attributed to several factors:
– Ongoing ambiguity surrounding the “6-seat” model that some parties are proposing for expat representation.
– A general lack of interest among expats, many of whom feel that past promises have amounted to little.
– A widespread lack of trust in political parties.

These reasons, while valid, should not discourage us from exercising our right to vote, even if that means submitting a blank vote. Numerous campaigns have been launched to encourage registration, including the most recent joint initiative by 16 groups urging expats online to register before the deadline.
