Ever since Israel started bombing Beirut’s suburbs, all airlines have cancelled their flights to Lebanon except for Middle East Airlines. However, one has to wonder if it’s really safe to fly over Beirut skies while Israel is dropping bombs left and right and we’ve seen at least three footages of MEA planes flying over clouds of smoke.
Even if the airport is not on Israel’s radar, the fact that there are warplanes flying around and bombs dropping left and right poses a serious threat to civil aviation, and it’s about time the government considers opening temporarily a second airport in North Lebanon. This has been on the table for years now and it should be a high priority to guarantee everyone’s safety.
We don’t know how long this war will last and how it will evolve, but we sure do know it’s not 100% safe for planes to fly over a war zone. Let’s hope the government does something right for a change and open the Kleiat airport ASAP.
