I was driving back from AUB when my friend spotted this seemingly tornado in the sea facing the AUB beach. Apparently tornadoes at sea are called waterspouts.
It is touching the water even though it doesn’t show very clearly. I couldn’t get a better picture of it. We don’t get to see those everyday in Lebanon. In fact, I don’t know much about weather but I thought those things happen in winter or after a storm or something.
Here’s a close up picture.
they were two actually!! they were pretty scary, i saw them at around 9 this morning.
in these pictures it was starting to die out…
Here is the one I shot last year

They actually asked us to use it friskies and we only requested that we be referenced 🙂
Happens every year 🙂 we’re lucky these things never get close to land.
Haha.. They’re actually safe… They happen because the humidity in the higher levels is lower than the lower levels (don’t ask me too technical details) so water is sucked up to the higher levels. They can’t approach the ground, cause if they do, there want be any water, and they’ll just die out… They’re basically the reverse of the water going down your drain!
Don’t worry ladies… Your hairstyles are safe!! :p
Oh and thanks for the pictures… I’ve been telling people that I saw them, but no one was believing me!!
My cousins back in tripoli always take photos of tornadoes in the sea, apparently they are somewhat common in the winter months. I will try to get them to send me some of the photos they took so i could share it with you guys.
Also i believe that the old photo of the tornado is a still from this video http://vimeo.com/10597824?ab, scary shit.
oh nvm, it isn’t a still from the video, but still the video is pretty cool 😛
They’re called water spouts, not tornadoes. And they’re not dangerous. Once they hit land, they dissipate imediately. But yes, they’re quite beautiful.
