Last Christmas I got my 78 year old Grandmother a laptop. I figured that you see older people using laptops, so why not her? She’s extremely smart and sharp. So for the past year she’s been using the basic functionalities, like writing Word documents, playing solitaire etc.
She’s been telling me that she wants to try the internet for a while now. So for Christmas this year I got her a MOBI. For those of you who don’t know, MOBI, according to their website, “residential and corporate users high speed Internet connection anytime, anywhere“. “high” is an overstatement and I’m not sure it should be included in that sentence since the connection is only 512 Kbps.
I thought it would be very easy to install and use, Plug & Play type of thing. Not at all! The installation of the software is pretty simple, but what you have to do after that is very complicated for the average user. The instructions are not clear, at one point I was asked to enter a code, I couldn’t find it. I called the MOBI hotline and they said that the code is sent by SMS to my mobile phone. At no point during the entire installation process was I informed that I should expect to receive an SMS!
So much complication for something that is supposed to be extremely simple to install and use!
well at least it works, i mean internet on the go is something that is very close to being a dream in Lebanon.
I used mobi for two weeks during my last visit to Lebanon. My Lady, who is a lebanese, used it for months before that.
Let me explain you what mobi is, in my “french point of view” but, in first, PLEASE, REALLY, FORGIVE ME …
Because I’m going to be seriously gross …
MOBI is a true piece of shit, a scrap, a scam, these people should be sent into jail or worst especially when you see their advertisings …
You pay a fortune for something which give you, at full signal, something like 6ko (not kb, ko) in upload and “maybe” 12ko (yeah, not kb) in download… when you are suppose to get 32ko in upload and 128ko in download … and you can’t complain, worst, you have to say “thank you” for such service ? I mean … WTF ?
You have to pay like 200$ just for the “stuff” and then it’s 50-70$ per months for something which almost not functional ?!!
Especially after midnight, you know ? the “free download time” ??
The speed is going to crash almost completly .. don’t expect some cool video chat on skype or something … it’s not gonna work … eeeeven if you have a full signal …
Good luck with moby my friend …
Back in France (UL 100ko/DL 1.5mo) it’s the only thing I don’t miss from Lebanon … the internet with these frauds …
Have to agree with all of you here..I got a mobi a couple of weeks ago, and the installation and usage process was not a walk in the park! And I get so frustrated every time I want to upload a picture or watch a video, because I want my $50 to last until the end of the month! Arggghhh.. We can’t have it all, all the time, now can we?
Ok, mobi is SUPER hard to install, but there is an easy way to do it — you just bring your laptop into the store where you bought the mobi, and get the guys to set it up for you. Much, much simpler than trying to deal with the helpline.
Second point — it still sucks, but the connection doesn’t suck any worse than mobile broadband elsewhere in the world, and ONLY in lebanon have I ever found the after midnight free data allowance, which is a total lifesaver. So don’t hate too hard 🙂
My mobile broadband connexion on my cellphone, my friend, cost me 35 euros/months** and I have a 115ko/Sc upload, 140ko/sc download (the best I got was smtg like 160/160, but only once). So, come again ? (connexion 3G+)
About free internet after midgnight, you have the “Wise” compagny which will give you some real offer in that case. You have to pay recharge cards. But thing is, it’s less interesting bcs you can download less during the “no-free” time.
PS : sorry for my english. I think you already guessed my native language 😉
