Call it a Christmas miracle, or credit the upcoming parliament elections, but the Chekka highway has finally fully reopened after six years of partial closure. Back in 2018, a section of the highway was shut down following major landslides that required the reconstruction of a retaining wall. The works were reportedly delayed by the 2019 financial crisis and ongoing funding obstacles. But, as with so many projects in this country, accountability appears to be optional even after six years of closures, delays, and sheer mismanagement.
Let us rejoice that the funds were eventually found to build a wall and reopen a vital highway, and hope that this time the job was done properly, and that the wall actually holds.
