An old picture showing rainbow cakes sold at Pain D’or resurged online few weeks ago, triggering an Anti-LGBTQ campaign against pastry shops selling rainbow cakes. The campaign even extended to include festivals that were raising colorful flags.
Pain D’or responded to the controversy by issuing a statement condemning the attacks on the institution and clarifying that they have nothing to do with such movements, in referring to the LGBTQ community. While I understand that they wanna stir away from controversy and keep their client base, they could have simply indicated that these cakes are meant as being joyful ones for kids, and not for any other purposes, without the need to position themselves against a group of Lebanese.
All in all, it’s incredibly worrying to see the amount of hate and ignorance triggered by a piece of cake, and the calls to violence against the LGBTQ community in Lebanon.
