Here’s amateur footage of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan today. Tsunami alerts have been issued in more than 10 countries. [Article] [Video]
We’ve been warned about future earthquakes in Lebanon and I can only imagine the devastation a similar strength earthquake would cause in Lebanon. Look at the amount of damage Japan received and their infrastructure and buildings are designed to withstand earthquakes. [Earthquake-Lebanon]
Actually thanks to the Japanese engineers that are genius’s all buildings in Tokyo haven’t collapsed due to the earthquake. Most of the devastation and damage is being caused by the Tsunami, not the earthquake itself.
yeah the effects of Today’s quake, although big is nothing to what happened in Kobe, but it’s still too early to make any conclusion. there are many factors that affect buildings, and today’s quake might have had different frequencies and directional effect to the one that devastated Kobe.
The Tsunami is something you can’t build against however… the force of the thing is just jaw droopingly incredible…
It’s not only the earthquake but the way the government responds to it. Their engineering and architecture are earthquake proof (as much as possible). I have a friend in Tokyo right now and she says the city is shut down. I could just imagine Lebanese the curious cats that they are doing the opposite and flooding the streets.
In the case of 8.9 in Lebanon; I could imagine 90% of all buildings down as well as all the garbage washed into the sea from the dumps… 😀
Gianni, that storm we had raging the past few days was enough to dump most of the garbage in Saida back into the med…
as for the buildings collapsing, with Lebanon’s mostly rocky foundations, i imagine a lot of carnage.
however if that ever happens, i ‘imagine’ it would be a great, but costly lesson, that will teach Lebanese a lot about helping each other out or caring…perhaps that is what is needed…morbid wishes I know, but that’s how desperate our social situation is…
My heart goes out to the Japanese people!!
My heart goes out to the Japanese people!!
I second that…..
as i see it, we will be living in tents like Qaddafi…our infrastructure sucks, most buildings are too old, or build in an economical way so both are going down…and to make things worse our beloved government isnt prepared for any kind of situation :S
