The law that Lebanon’s parliament passed last week to remove banking secrecy rules is yet another joke and a waste of time and efforts. No one’s fighting corruption or recovering stolen funds with that law, simply because it doesn’t cover investigating accounts outside Lebanon, and the committees in charge of investigating corruption cases are mainly appointed by politicians and consist of The National Anti-corruption Commission and a Special Investigative Committee at the central bank.

In other words, you will hear in the coming weeks/months about new scapegoats and mid-level civil servants getting arrested or interrogated while the masterminds remain untouched.
