I don’t know who is behind the website [U-Harass] but it’s irresponsible to publish inaccurate statistics regarding sexual harassment in Lebanese Universities. You can’t possibly come up with such assumptions based on a sample of 221 students from 20 different universities.
The American University of Beirut has over 6000 students (Let’s say 50/50 male/female) so if we take the average of students per university, barely 12 out of the 3000 AUB students answered this survey, which is less than 1% of the AUB population.
Sexual Harassment is a very serious topic that should be tackled in a more professional way.
I realize that on the surface 221 students does not look like a big number, but I am a statistician and that sample size is not bad to make inferences about the population of university students. It is not enough though to be able to look at each university individually.
I know it seems counter-intuitive, but good samples have almost nothing to do with the percentage of the population that they cover, especially for large populations. This is based on mathematical statistical theory. In the US for example, they make important inferences about the WHOLE 310 million US population using a sample of 10,000 people.
While obviously this subject needs to be studied in a more serious way, the size of this sample is not the problem. They should report standard deviations (or confidence intervals) for their number estimates.
This is the first thing that came to my mind. You’re completely right …. Statistics on a sample of 221 students from 20 universities … ha!
not to forget that 75% of the surveyed students lied as in Lebanon most have an inflated self value and take any conversation as sexual harassment. That’s a BULLSHIT survey!
ok guys.. hold on..
this blog post or comments below it, are kind of right and wrong.
first you should know that this is a small project for a training.. and.. i don’t know why the sudden hype on social media about it, when this has been published waaaay back .
here is a link to explain more about this project:

This is pure bullshit. I’ve been at Lebanese University for 5 years, and I’ve never even heard of such a thing.
As rick said, a lot of lebanese girls are conservative and they would tkae any vonversation as sexual harassment. Besides, a survey done online would get the more attention from people who have been harassed than from people who have not, unless the survey was done to random people.
Firstly let’s define sexual harassment as understood by the addle headed Lebanese youth(boys/men). I believe the harassment is even greater than reported. In a culture that seems to think that they are supreme or more developed then others while wallowing in a pitiful state; more can not be expected.
Najib, if the sample is done scientifically; then the size is more than enough!
