The streets of Beirut aren’t as safe as they used to be. Or at least, this is the feeling that many girls and women have nowadays. Sexual predators are everywhere, and according to witnesses who spoke to NOW, it doesn’t matter whether it’s the middle of the night or the middle of the day; whether the streets are empty or full of people.
Lea Khayata is a 25-year-old Lebanese woman who lives abroad and comes back for the holidays. Last summer, she was in Beirut for an internship and wanted to catch a service early in the morning. She was in a hurry and didn’t think twice when the driver flung open the door next to him for her to get into the front passenger’s seat. “I know you’re never supposed to sit next to the driver, but he was so old, and I was in such a hurry, I thought it would be ok.” First, he heavily brushed his arm against her breasts by pretending to reach for the door because it wasn’t closed properly. “It was until he put his hand on my thigh and started stroking it that I realized what he was doing,” she said. Khayata opened the door and got out of the service right away. [Full Story]
I’ve been hearing a lot of stories lately and the streets are no longer safe neither for men nor for women to be honest. Abaad, a Resource Center for Gender Equality, gave NowLebanon few tips for women to stay safe:
1. Stay on main streets. Stick to well-lit, well-traveled streets. Avoid shortcuts through construction sites, parking lots or alleys, where rapists or stalkers can hide.
2. Scream. Most sexual predators are looking for an easy target, and if you make a scene they will probably leave you alone.
3. Distract them. If you’re stuck in an elevator with someone and you have a bad feeling about him, make small talk. Discuss the weather or ask for the time. By instigating a conversation you’ll catch him off guard, and he’s more likely to not do anything.
4. Fight back. If someone grabs you, pinch the attacker under the arm between the elbow and the armpit, or in the upper inner thigh. After the initial pinch, go for the groin. Hit him with your knee, then run.
5. Run. Get out of there. Make a lot of noise. If he feels like someone else might notice, he will most probably run the other way himself.
Sadly even if you scream people are going to just look at you and keep on going!
Today a wiman got robbed in front of my office, i was in no position to help her as i was inside my office and she was being robbed by a guy on a motorbike across the street, it happened so fast the guy grabbed on her handbag and she didn’t let go so he dragged her behind him, a car was right behind them when the women fell down in the middle of the road the car just changed it’s path . The car driver could have easily went after the thief or at least parked and helped the poor woman but instead he kept going as well as others! where are the good people in this country?
i would have left my office to help her but by the time i would hae gotten there it was all over
The streets are not only not safe because of sexual predators but from thieves that can rob you in the middle of the day 100m away from the “3adlieh”
If lebanese streets are not safe, how we would like to attract toursits ?
I remembered Lebanon as one of the safest country of the world, at mid-day or 3am.
Please we have to think : if Lebanese people could be united as their “war brothers” = Lebanon would be THE most beautiful country with high economy !
To turn back to a safe country, we have to ba united and fight bad guys. By fighting I mean going to police station, or if possible taking picture of bad guys and post them around streets.
Lebanon is a small country, nobody would like to have his face on a wall with assimilate words like bad or sexual predator 🙂
La scream wala run!
Carry pepper spray or a taser!
Tasers are available everywhere and are very cheap!
Stick to well-lit, well-traveled streets. wl kahraba men wayn??
To Lea Khayata,,
I think you rode with the same taxi driver i took 2 or 3 years ago.. the same exact thing happened.. and it was still day time, and luckily we got stuck in a traffic jam on Cola right after few minutes..
