The majority of people in seven predominantly Muslim countries prefer women to completely cover their hair, and not necessarily their face, in public according to a recent survey conducted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research.
According to this study, woman #6 who was without any headscarf, was chosen by 49% of respondents in Lebanon. Second most popular choice was woman #4.
I don’t know why buzzfeed chose to display this specific finding only as the original study is a more thorough and interesting one. In fact, it’s a comparative study between the Tunisian Citizens and 6 other different countries in regards to Gender Relations, Social Individualism, Secular Politics, Form of Government, People’s Wishes Versus the Shari’a , National Identity and National Pride, Concerns with Western Culture and Conspiracy, Religious Tolerance, Mosque Attendance, Likeability of and Attitudes toward Violence against Americans.
Here are additional findings related to Lebanon:
– Only 35% of Lebanese are proud of being citizens of Lebanon.
– 69% of Lebanese reported love as being an important basis for marriage (Against 7% in Pakistan).
– 44% disagree or strongly disagree that men make better political leaders than women.
– 50% of Lebanese like Americans as neighbors.
– Only 19% of Lebanese think it’s good that the army rules.
– 73% of Lebanese think life is unpredictable and dangerous in Lebanon.
i doubt the numbers sara7a … expecially the saudi arabia numbers …
I disagree that we are a muslim country in the first place!
Not because I am christian, but simply because we are not a muslim country per se
Lebanon is not a Muslim country.. it is a country with Muslim citizens
I don’t mean to be sectarian or talking about religion but its TRUE ,the alarming number of Syrians and Muslims is putting the country at risk for its a lit bit of openness it enjoys over the other Arab countries ,im afraid that this might lead in the future for women to be completely covered up, some men ,even among the Christians are very closed minded regarding womens clothing ,some are against those wearing shorts and yesss youd find people like that even now , and im afraid they might use old laws who are not under effect to actually be under effect ,so Lebanese women should start fighting for their rights as well as theright of passing the Citizenship to their children instead of wasting time all day on Instagram or facebook ,im sorry that’s the truth
Maya.. You are correct in your thoughts. Governments/countries that have Islamic law do not allow for individual freedoms or tolerance of others outside the Muslim faith.. tolerance/democracy is against their religious beliefs which is why not one country with a Islamic Government enjoys the freedoms taken for granted in other countries. Lebanon’s freedoms and cosmopolitan lifestyle is due to its once christian majority. This fact allowed Lebanon to be the only western style country with freedoms and tolerance unheard of in the middle east.. Lebanon was famous for its diversity, freedoms, cosmopolitan lifestyle..which is slowly being taken away today as Lebanon’s Christians migrate to other countries and their influence is diminished in Lebanon’s government.
Apparently the same persons who prefer a military regime are in favor of a democratic system, especially in Egypt 😛
Lebanon got the solution though: Elect the head of the army as President.

One more thing ,its far fetched for Americans to be our neighbors ,but on the other hand we can compare Israel to US, Israel is a developing country unlike us, a 3rd world country ,we can compare ourselves to Mexico and US , where in our case the borders are completely closed , whatever the case the neighboring country isn’t much of an advantage except if it were a very developed big country where job opportunities are present but then again even if the borders weren’t closed with Israel ,theyre not really enjoying of much freedom themselves either ,theyre constantly at war and afraid of bombs themselves , on the other side Syria ,a closed minded country , our only good border is the sea . Another thing ,ive been hearing a loot lately sexist remarks from males whether Christians or Muslims in Leb against females ,how they dress up,they talk , and mostly from the latter ( its the truth ,not a racist or sectarian thing ) , and most importantly from army men , so please don’t be offended but I don’t like our army ,I don’t like our President ,I don’t like all the other statesmen ,because theyre all men of cowardice and who seldom have sex and harass women , even the army ,yessss ,even them ,soo nooo offence , I don’t respect them just like they don’t respect me as a woman , I don’t like their stares ,the way they behave around women ,how they treat at check points while they let Syrians get away with their acts
