An estimated 8 million tons of plastic end up in oceans every year, and this plastic pollution is surfing onto Lebanese shores and damaging the marine ecosystems. Unfortunately, the problem is not only plastic pollution in Lebanon as all sorts of trash end up in our waters while the authorities are too busy turning public beaches into private luxurious resorts.

Fortunately, Recycle Lebanon has been organizing beach clean ups for months now and a lot of volunteers have been joining to pick up the garbage washing up on the shorelines. In fact, Recycle Lebanon has been doing Sort2Recycle clean ups to get people to DiveIntoAction for a total of 1 year and 5 months and have set programs called #RootsAcademia workshops and the #EcoSouk to tackle what could be done as their project goes beyond clean ups.

There’s a lot that can be done but the inaction and ongoing negligence of the authorities and concerned ministries are not helping. What you can do to help is volunteer and help individually just like many brave young men and women are.

I will never understand why it’s so hard for many Lebanese to understand that by polluting their own beaches and damaging the eco-system, they are harming themselves and affecting the health and resources of other humans? How long till they reflect on the consequences that it can do to the country they are living in?
