DW shared a two-minute video showing excerpts from the latest Ramadan TV shows where women are being abused by their husbands or parents, and explaining how these shows are helping normalize domestic abuse against women. My question is though: Most of these female actresses are more than capable of influencing the producers/directors and standing for their rights. Why do they accept such roles? And why don’t they condemn these scenes?
On a different note, how fake is that scene at Minute 0:24? And to think some people actually convinced me of watching Al Hayda (which I didn’t yet).
My husband watches this show called “Bab el harra” and I absolutely feel sick when I watch that show. The screaming and wailing from the women as they get abused doesn’t sit well with me. I know it’s just a show, but it’s too much!!! So many episodes of overbearing and cruel men, laying down the law on “disobedient” wives! The most disgusting one I’ve seen was the woman who had her children taken away from her and given to her in laws to raise. I’m sorry to say, but most of the Arabic drama shows he watches are disgusting in this way towards the female characters. They are nothing but objects and or chattel. It’s to the point where I told him he cannot watch these shows in front of our young impressionable sons. This is NOT normal, and quite frankly should NOT be commonplace on Arab tv when they have the current domestic abuse crisis going on within their societies. These shows depict strong emotional and physical abuse on women. It makes me sick.
