Donner Sang Compter is planning to create the world’s biggest ever human blood drop on the upcoming World Blood Donor day. More than 3500 Lebanese people will participate in this event. [Link]
Who the hell has time to organize such pointless things? Are we on some sort of mission to have the world’s silliest Guinness records? Wouldn’t it be smarter to raise money and open an additional yet very much needed blood bank, and with that prevent hospitals from trafficking blood by selling them to those in need?

Well Najib the idea and ‘point’ behind this is mainly to raise awareness so that people can actually donate more blood.
This initiative is for once something that people can actually appreciate instead of belittling and criticizing.. I don’t maybe that’s just my opinion.
If you think about it, having supplies of blood will reduce the number of BBMs, Texts and Facebook messages we receive on a daily basis regarding blood donations for people in hospitals.
^it was his idea
Andre,
Raise awareness on what exactly? People cannot donate enough blood because we don’t have enough blood banks, not because they are not aware enough.
No one’s gonna donate more blood if you break a guinness world record and you will keep on receiving as many texts and email and BBms as long as you don’t have enough blood banks. Mustapha from the Beirut Spring has always pointed this out and I am saying this again.
You need blood banks, not stupid Guinness world records.
And while I am not doubting the organization as a whole, I ask them to monitor some of the blood traffic that’s happening in hospitals when patients in critical situations (mainly rich ones) need blood, instead of wasting their precious time to get 3500 people to wear red shirts.
Najib has a point. this stunt is useless, they would be better off doing a “Flash Mob” of some-kind, maybe a flash mob where the 3500 people arrive at a blood bank and give their blood… preferably all of them with the rarer blood types..
It is important to also raise the matter of how expensive and uneconomical blood banks are.
In a blood bank, you need 24-hour electricity to keep the temperature low, you need experts testing the blood frequently for viruses and bacteria, and you need spotlessly hygienic conditions.
This is so expensive in fact that many economists think blood banks are not worthwhile and it’s better to keep a natural blood bank (volunteers)..
i always seem to find interesting alterntives to those silly recent Lebanese record-breaking events. they always have a point, but are executed in a silly matter. like in this case, instead of the human blood drop shape, why not trying to break the record for most blood donations in one day. i think that would raise awareness while still being interesting. on the other hand, to agree with Najib, that would also trigger awareness for the lack of blood banks in Lebanon.
this “the biggest, the tallest..” Guinness record is getting on my nerves!! it’s like a disease in our society!
it’s a waist of time.
it reminds me of a hilarious article i once saw in a Lebanese blog. kindly let me know if I’m allowed to post the link here.
keep up the good work.
just so you guys know, this record is helping the people searching for potential blood donors, since the event is gna be cvered up by medias… dont u think this can help?
we will also collect blood donors numbers and adresses for the data base of the association (which is the main actual job of DSC)
maybe DSC does not actually have the needed potential to own a blood bank with all the equipments needed!
material donations and blood donors’ data are being collected for the association every time a stand is installed anywhere…
so if you can help DSC instead of criticizing the event would be better! 🙂
all these donations may lead us to have DSC’s blood banks 😉
Waw i know this is an old article but i couldn’t stop on such … what can i call it
ya3ne i am astonished to see your comment bass haram what can i say: ” pointless thing” what are you doing that is so interesting be4 judging blindly do please ask the organizers their goals and what they are doing it is not just to come together and have fun…
1- public was made aware
2- Funds were raised that will bring us closer to such Blood banks that you seem to know allot about
3-Almost 1000 People Donated Blood that day!
I am not an organizer by the way and all these 3 Pointless things i was able to come up with them logically and after attending such an event
(: just answering on some comments… DSC functions by calling people when blood is needed yes our smart country with its smart citizens doesn’t have smart blood banks but thank God for DSC instead of criticizing they are doing something and finding an alternative, giving blood was some what a taboo in Lebanon so breaking that wall and encouraging people to save lives i don’t think is a pointless thing)
No need to reply im sure you forgot about this pointless article but you if you haven’t been to the last DSC event ( 24 june 2012) i encourage you to end the one next year maybe you can do something meaningful instead of writing such negative reviews on such a positive event promoting life
Hi Nad,
Looking back at this article, I got to know DSC better and I was a bit harsh in this post indeed. It could be that the marketing last year wasn’t as good as this year but it looked like another silly guinness record we were doing. I still don’t agree with turning it into a Guinness thing because we’ve had enough with those and it’s becoming very silly marketing. Nevertheless the guys from DSC are hard workers and they have all my support and respect for the work they pull.
I think bringing Nemr Bou Nassar and other celebrities in Lebanon like they did this year is a much better strategy, even though they did break their own human blood drop record again.
