Laura Dudas, an Ottawa councillor, has officially asked council to recognize Ottawa as “The Shawarma Capital of Canada”. The council is expected to vote on this motion at their next meeting.

I have no idea how many Shawarma places Beirut has but Ottawa has nearly 200 restaurants which is a lot. The real question is how many good ones are there. I looked up reviews on Yelp, Tripadvisor & a couple of other website and “Shawarma Palace”, “Jericho Lebanese Food” and “3 Brothers” were mentioned in all.

One has to ask: Why is Shawarma so popular in Ottawa?

One website said “because it’s a healthier alternative to other, way more unhealthy, fast food”. One might argue it’s not the healthiest of foods, but it’s much healthier when your alternatives are poutines and junk food.
