Lebanese people from different cultural, social, and religious backgrounds painted their faces and wore colorful costumes to take part in the 2025 Zambo Festival edition. The festival includes music, dancing, and feasting, and ends with all participants jumping into the sea to wash off their paint.
It’s still unclear who introduced this century-old tradition to Lebanon. Some claim that Lebanese immigrants from South America started it, while others attribute it to Senegalese forces stationed in Lebanon during World War II. Either way, it’s a unique celebration that brings together all communities, culminating in participants diving into the Mediterranean Sea to wash off their paint.
