Update [March 8 2017]: Shura Council has once again ordered all constructions works to stop on Ramlet el Baida after a new construction license emerged.

Lebanon’s Shura Council issued a decision today to halt temporarily construction works of a luxury resort on the Ramlet el Baida beach, following a request for review that was submitted by Green Line Association and Legal Agenda three months ago. Several violations (listed below) were highlighted in the review in an attempt to annul the construction license, such as “Violation of the Environmental Protection Act” and depriving people from “their right to access the sea”, as well as a “violation of Decree No. 2366/2009 of the Lebanese territory order”.

مخالفة القرار 26/188 المتعلق بإنشاء السجل العقاري وقانون البناء وقانون ضم الأراضي وفرزها في الأماكن الآهلة لجهة ضم العقارات على نحو يتعارض مع القواعد القانونية الواجب تطبيقها في عمليات الضم والفرز،
استناد المجلس الأعلى للتنظيم المدني على معطى خاطئ لجهة طبيعة الأرض وإساءة تحديد التراجعات عن الأملاك البحرية،
مخالفة قانون البناء لجهة عدم الإستحصال على دراسة للأثر البيئي،
مخالفة قانون حماية البيئة والتعدي على الحق بالتمتع بالبيئة والولوج إلى البحر،
مخالفة المرسوم رقم 2366/2009 المتعلق بترتيب الأراضي اللبنانية.

Chances are that The Shura Council’s decision will be overturned after 30 days and construction works will proceed but activists are hopeful that they’ll be able to stop the whole project. Check out further info [here].
