in AUB the football pitch and the IC pitch used to go white for a few minutes under heavy hail… an interesting sight. but yeah, it was hail.
It was a lot of hail. Hail is made when something small (like dust or pollution) has ice formed around it. It bounces around the atmosphere until it falls (gets too heavy, etc), collecting more ice/water as it moves. I can’t prove this(I suppose I could look it up), but my theory is that here in Lebanon we get LOTS of small hail because of the level of pollution, esp. in urban areas. Hail falls during thunderstorms where snow and freezing rain aren’t so “violent”.
Hail can be small like we often see around here (pea-sized) or large (golf-ball or baseball-sized).
