As much as I am very proud to see this, it’s shameful that we had to wait for an outside hand to come up with all that.
I am sure there are many local Lebanese groups that are doing a lot, so perhaps we should start giving them more publicity and appreciation to what they are achieving. Why give credit to an outsider when our own people can do more?!
Sami, I don’t think USAid is taking credit for the courage, creativity and pride of Lebanese youth. All they did was hand out tools (education) for the young people to use. You don’t give the award to the oven when a chef makes a prize-winning pastry, you give it to the chef!
What a great clip for English-speaking people to share, it makes a real change from what we usually see in the West in news items on Lebanon. I’m sure there ARE lots of local stories, but without Blog Baladi translating them for me, I would never get to hear about them.
Perhaps the phrasing of my post wasn’t clear, and I apologize for that.. As a person living in North America I also appreciate what is being posted on this blog. That’s where I get my news about home rather than newspapers (Not the best idea, but at least this blog is unbiased).
What I was trying to get to is it’s shameful that we have to see an outside organization come in and fix our problems. I am aware that the U.S. is not the one to blame, that’s utterly a great initiative. It’s us to blame, Lebanese, we’re dependent… We don’t help one another as much as we are supposed to.
