Stand-up Comedian Russell Peters is coming to Lebanon on March 24th for one night at the Platea Hall and I was checking back one of his performances when he talks about going clubbing in Lebanon. I honestly didn’t find this video funny, neither did Mark few months back, because it’s simply not what Lebanese do or sound like and I don’t know who are those four guys he went out with (If he ever did), but they sure are not Lebanese. The only thing he got right was the “habibi” thing.
Otherwise:
– How many Lebanese do you know say “B” instead of “P”?
– Also, I’ve never heard that “Lebanese” accent he’s trying to reproduce. No one speaks like that here.
– Speaking of B018, you can’t possibly hear BOAT instead of BO18. If anything you hear B080 not BOAT!
– Moreover, B018 is not just some random club in the middle of nowhere. You can see it from the highway with all the lights and cars around it, so I don’t know how he only saw a bouncer in the middle of a parking lot (unless he went there at 9pm).
– B018 is not meant to look like a bomb shelter but a coffin and it opens up and closes during the night. How did he realize it’s a bomb shelter? What was his first hint?
The only stand-up comedian that I’ve seen and made me laugh about Lebanese is Nemr Abou Nassar. I heard there are lots of funny stand-up comedians performing at the Comedy Club in Monot but I haven’t been there yet.
For those interested in buying tickets for his show on March 24th at the Platea Hall in Maameltein, click [Here].
Is this how a bomb shelter looks like in Canada or India?
B-O-EIGH-TEEN sounds like the letters B, O, A, T which also sounds the same as BO80
Now why would I say it’s called B-O-A-T if its called BOAT?
I would say BOAT.
LOL chill, that’s the joke exactly. He thought people were saying B-O-A-T instead of boat which surprised him as well…
Not funny 🙂
This looks like a repost 🙂

He’s coming to Lebanon in March which reminded me of this video and I posted my comments in detail. He pissed me off with those jokes of him.
he’s not funny in this skit but he’s usually a very funny guy. oh and he wasn’t funny in the christmas special either. when is he coming to leb and where can we buy tickets from?
I added info to the post. you can buy tickets on virgin ticketing office website.
i totally agree his stand up regarding the time he spent in Lebanon was not funny at all, turning the friendly hospitality Lebanese people provided into rudeness.
OMG finally somebody understands.. this guy is NOT funny. Thank you. I dont know how people find him hilarious and idk what.
He is funny most of the time. (Not the above though) However he needs new material and he Definitely is no George Carlin.
Najib don’t worry about the Lebanese accent; you are cool. Do they have bomb shelters in Canada? I thought they hide in igloos lol.:D
Definitely no Louis CK.
yes yes i agree man
my taiwaneese friend showed me this video, i had to pretend it made me laugh a little but i was pissed
Relax people. It’s a comedy!! He’s one of the funniest comedians in the world. I liked the clip.
I think you took this a bit too personally, he’s a comedian, he’s not someone who is supposed to be factually accurate. I think you need to lighten up buddy :]
And you’d be surprised at how many times I hear someone say “Batrick” and not “Patrick”.
He is lame and not talented; he uses a comment he heard once to generalise it on a whole population and make a sketch out of it. This is on you spot a bad stand-up comedian.
Oh my god. . I guess the fact that he is one of the most popular and well known comedians in the world means nothing to you.. and your process of judging a bad comedian is the same process I use on people who take offence from trivial exaggerations which force cultures to realize how stuck up they may or may not be.
He’s a comedian. Nobody likes their own people or country to be made fun of but if he cracked the same jokes about any other country in the Middle East you may have found it funny.
Grow a pair.
I personally didn’t find it funny not because its poking fun out of lebanese, but because it was lame. lebanese make fun out of lebanese all the time, doesn’t anyone watch SLCHI? But there is funny and there is not funny, in this specific skit I didn’t find him that funny.
This is weird, at first you point out everything wrong in him then put a link to where you buy the tickets from. Comedians don’t have to make sense all the time and we don’t have to like everything they say. They’re here to make people laugh and in Russle’s case. It working pretty fine.
I’m from Jordan. Did you hear his talk about the prank pulled on him by our king?, some people didn’t like that too as well and yes he might have made up some stuff about Jordan and so did Nemr Abu Nassar but that doesn’t make them wrong or whatever you think of them.
the king pulled a prank on russle peteters? i’d watch that got a link?
Yup he did, here you go http://bit.ly/m2edUo
lol that’s kick ass
Najib also added a link since I wanted to know where i can buy tickets from. Najib stated his opinion and then informed his readers where they can get tickets to watch the show, nothing wrong with that.
I know there isn’t anything wrong about it, i just found it a bit weird, that’s all.
Well I am not planning to boycott him cause I don’t find him funny lol.
Najib: You shouldn’t take all the jokes literally. The guy can exaggerate a bit since it’s not a documentary. If he says BO18 is in the middle of no where it’s fine. If he calls it a bomb shelter, it’s fine. The aim is to be funny not accurate.
lol i just noticed that I uploaded this video onto youtube.
Man he’s fucking hilarious and I’m sorry if you don’t find him funny, but opinions are like assholes, everyone has one!
I love BO18 I love Lebanon, and I still find him funny. Think about it from an Indian Canadian guys perspective: he’s in beirut!! Bey fucking rut, a place infamous in the 80’s for kidnapping ( don’t know how old you are and if you remember that era) so he’s going with these random guys on our usually unlit roads to caren fukin Tina an area notorious for massacres back in the days to a place that when closed does look like a bomb shelter and you can’t see it from a mile away especially before 3 in the morning when there are no cars parked around it.
So seriously he’s a comedian he does his thing by taking everyday things and thoughts and making them as universal as possible and making them funny, it’s hit and miss.
Hell I find RAW hilarious but you might’ve been offended by all the cursing, but that’s the beauty of choice: you can watch it or not, just don’t bitch and whine about it!
ever heard of someone being the target of caricature/sketch and finding it funny? Russel Peters is the funniest out there and cannot be compared to beginner Nemr!!
I am a Canadian and have heard a few of Russell Peters routines. He is not funny in my opinion.
Jeez you Lebanese have lost any sense of humor. Sure that BO18 skit wasn’t as funny as his others, but why the heck are you so offended about it?
That’s the problem with you Lebanese. You take EVERYTHING and ANYTHING too personally.
“Is this how a bomb shelter looks like in Canada or India?”
Luckily for him, he doesn’t come from a country as f***ed up as ours. Probably the reason he has no idea what a bomb shelter looks like.
Russell Peters is one of the highest paid comedians in the world. So while he’s out there making millions, enjoy this blog of yours and Nemr’s stand up comedy shows (that are definitely NOT worth millions and not nearly as funny as Russell Peters).
Learn to not take everything so personally. So what if he got the Lebanese accent wrong? Big effing deal!
NM
You seem to be the one taking things perrsonally. I don’t think he s funny and his imitation of the Lebanese is stupid and wrong and from what I heard his last show in Lebanon sucked.
Keep seeing him and letting him make millions. I don’t like his comedy shows not his character or manners so as far as I see it, u r the one taking it personal that we offended him.
And if I am not mistaken he is from India originally and the country is really fucked up
“Commenting is a privilege not a right. I allow comments on the site because I believe that you can make a valuable contribution but in return I expect that you comment responsibly.”
“And if I am not mistaken he is from India originally and the country is really fucked up”
Hmm. I hope not everyone from Lebanon is so blatantly as hypocritical as you are being. Yes, I am from India, if it matters to you.
Don’t take things out of context. Lebanon is fucked up in many things and so is India and many other countries.
Quite the contrary. I did read all of your comments before saying that. While I do agree that you are entitled to your opinion about Russell Peters not being funny, it has nothing to do with any country being fucked up.
And my point is just this. If you want people to comment responsibly, you, as the writer of this blog, should comment responsibly too. The comment above you wasn’t in the best of taste but that doesn’t mean that you should fly off the handle as well and start berating other countries.
Berating other countries? Someone was arguing that luckily for him he doesnt come from a country as fucked up as ours and I stated that India is also messed up in many ways like Lebanon and that’s a fact not a personal opinion.
It was just an answer to a specific comment and not directed against India as a country. I am sorry you took it this way but Lebanon is fucked up and there’s nothing anyone can say that can make me convinced otherwise.
First of all, I am Lebanese and I think that is proof enough that I do not take things personally, especially since I’m not crying over a “bad Lebanese accent”.
Second of all, I think you should be happy that a man of his reputation even visited Lebanon, despite his “stupid and wrong” imitations of Lebanese.
Third of all, you should educate yourself and get out of the little bubble you are stuck in. Clearly you do not see the emergence of India as one of the most powerful and influential nations in the world in terms of economic performance, political stability, and a strong presence in global supremacy. You fight your own people (how many civil wars have you had again?), your electricity cuts every effing 6 hours, you guys choose colors to support political parties, your biggest idol is Haifa Wehbe, your biggest concern is who has the bigger boobs or the nicest nose, your students graduate from LAU and AUB and end up in entry level jobs at some random company getting minimum salary.
India, on the other hand, has this: http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2011/06/24/india-climbs-the-millionaire-rankings/ “It’s no surprise that the fastest growth in the number of super-rich is coming from emerging countries. For instance, India’s high net-worth population (defined as those having investable assets of $1 million or more, excluding primary home, collectibles and consumer durables) expanded nearly 21% in 2010 from a year earlier, thanks partly to the country’s booming economy and robust stock markets.”
(And by the way, the only millionaires are not just politicians who stole your money or the owner of SkyBar…)
A Lebanese is happy if we has the nicest table at Skybar. For him, that’s SUCESS. Wow. Indians, on the other hand, along with the Chinese, make up the MAJORITY of Ivy League school students.
And by the way, he’s Canadian. Born and raised.
NM,
No it’s not a proof and honestly you are showing as if you are taking this very personally, as if he is ur cousin or something. Is he paying u to defend him? were u the one who took him to “barty” at the “BOAT”?
Second, Is he the pope or something? He’s just another standup comedian that I happen not to like. I don’t give a damn if he visits Lebanon or not as I don’t really like him. He should be honored to be in my country as far as I am concerned.
Third, it seems to me you are taking things personal against myself right now and started stereotyping Lebanese?? Well then if you don’t like us that much, go to India and barty with ur fellow Ivy league friend ..
And while you are it, keep in mind that 42% of the Indian population is not just poor but below the poverty line.
I know he’s Canadian but he still has Indian parents. Nevertheless what you don’t seem to understand is that I wish you all the good but I just didn’t like his show and how he misrepresented the Lebanese. That’s my opinion and I am allowed to give it the same way he’s allowed to do whatever he want.
QUIT IT YOU TWO !
you guys are fighting over something extremely pointless,Najib I do respect the protocol of democracy (freedom of speech)..but jeez bro take a chill pill,he’s just a comedian tryin to make his jokes funny, and jokes are not supposed to sound serious or accurate,it’s just like us calling a dumb person “7OMSE” even though not all the people of 7omos are idiots but I believe that exaggeration is found in almost every joke, and honestly I did find Russell Peters funny,I did buy his tickets for his last event in Beirut coz i love stand up comedy, especially when it comes to racism :P…as for NM…you are the BIGGEST DOUCHE BAG EVER,you and ur cheap stereotypes about Lebanon, who are you to judge the Lebanese people ? what have YOU done to improve the development of this country..AKID MA SHI !..so it’s either shut your pie hole or leave Lebanon coz people like you are not helping it…people like you don’t deserve to be here, and if you’re already living abroad..it’s best for you to STAY THERE !
I’m a little late to this ‘barty,’ but this blog came up in a random Google search of Russell Peters. As a Canadian, I find Peters to be EXTREMELY funny – he’s one of the funniest stand-up comedians out there today. And don’t try to claim him being from India. He’s from Canada… period. I have to say that in order to find Peters funny, you have to HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR!
I find it funny that the writer of this blog posting seems to only cares about what Peters says about the Lebanese. So everything else he said about every other type of person (Indian, Chinese, whatever) was okay, but not what he said about the Lebanese? Seriously, chill out. It’s comedy, it’s silly, it’s exaggerated. You talk about how he “misrepresented” the Lebanese, but no, he just exaggerated it. Sorry, but that’s how comedy works. If you can’t understand that, then don’t watch stand-up comedy. If you want to watch someone talk about what Lebanon is really like, go watch a documentary.
KomradJabroni,
You can have a different sense of humor than a specific standup comedian and not find him funny. I was commenting on this specific clip about Lebanon and how it’s not funny because it has nothing to do with Lebanon or Lebanese.
If you think that’s how comedy works, good for you.
Hey guys listen Russell is hilarious and I am Lebanese and let’s be serious some of that stuff is awesome your not suppose to get offended when you watch comedy it’s suppose to be over exaggerating and let’s be serious is accent isn’t that bad at all my parents especially my father has that deep accent and when my cousin visited me in the US I shit you not I almost had the same conversation with him before even watching this stand up about BOAT I’ve visited countless amount of times Russell says it’s the best party place in the world and said good things as well besides that it’s not the point it’s comedy and you have to learn to appreciate it or just don’t watch it. My cousin always said things were “beautiful ” the same way Russell did. Everything in Lebanon to my cousin is “Top 3 in the world ” with a similar accent obviously his accent wasn’t perfect but he’s not Lebanese for one so when you don’t hear people use it everyday it’s harder to do. What do you want from the guy to go up there and say all nice things and talk about all actual things that go on ? Also for what one of those kids said let’s be honest we Lebanese like to show off we care what we look like and we do want to have nice things what’s the big deal with admitting it obviously not evey Lebanese but the young community come on we know it’s true. The whole barty thing clearly was a joke. I make these jokes with my dad all the time. My friend Simon which would be pronounced see-moe in Lebanon I joke and Call him Zimon and tell him that’s what ppl would call him in Lebanon he laughs he understand it’s a joke he doesn’t attack me and say it’s misrepsentatjon come ok Najib it’s one thing to say you don’t like him and think he’s not funny and I respect your opinion but don’t sit there and say it’s not the way Lebanon is blah blah blah who cares what anyone else thinks anyone educated enough will know that’s not what Lebanon is like because they understand it’s a comedy all comedies are far fetched and dragged on and partially if not mostly made up. I read all your arguments BTW be a little more consistent and on topic the calling out of other countries this that we both know it isn’t cool. There all stereotypes and stereotypes exist for a reason because they are partially true. The way he said “NO” is spot on all my uncles do it. I love Lebanon and Lebanese people but I will admit often times we don’t like to be wrong and that to me reading all these comments is what it comes down to. Enjoyed reading this and i do wish everyone well.
He’s hilarious!!!! Love his impression, it’s pretty spot on! http://youtu.be/I8ylcCbXpVk
