Achrafieh will soon have a new public garden, the Metropolitan bishop of the Greek Orthodox Church in Beirut Elias Audi garden. It’s located on a parallel street to Monot right before the Ahrar Party headquarters.
I have a suggestion for Beirut’s municipality: If they force every real estate company to fund and build a public garden for every skyscraper they come up with, we will have enough green spaces for all Beirut’s residents in no time. The size of the garden can be determined based on the size of the building, its cost or other factors.
Thoughts anyone?
Amazing idea najib. In Canada developers have to build parkettes any time they build a subdivision…That should definitely be a major condition. Soon enough the color green might return to Beirut and the pollution lessened!
where are you going to get the land to build these publics gardens on?
The same place they are buying lands to build skyscrapers
Yes but officials will not miss on being partners in these skyscrapers so you get to enjoy some green spaces. It’s not in the philosophy of Lebanese officials and politicians to think in that direction and unless we see a whole scale vision and policy for years to come done by the government this will never happen happen Unfortunatly as no one is aware enough to think less about the green in his pocket and think more about the green on the streets.
Actually the guy was forced to make this garden as part of damage control. When originally starting to dig for the building, they dug with zero care and actually hit the foundations of the church. The church nearly collapsed so they sued. He had to pay for the renovation of the church and made the garden to set things straight. I am with your proposal though, they should be forced to make more public space and/or renovate older buildings around them.
