On Tuesday, the cabinet increased the minimum wage to LL700,000 from LL500,000. It also raised by LL200,000 the wages of workers earning less than LL1 million. As for those who earn between LL1 million and LL1.8 million, they would get a LL300,000 raise. [Naharnet]
While this is great news, there seems to be something wrong with the decision taken as it excluded everyone earning between 1,000,000 and 1,800,000 LL. In fact, I just read on the Kataeb portal that the government might reconsider the draft to include everyone.
Why is it wrong?
Because it doesn’t make sense to add 300,000 LL for someone earning 1,750,000 and exempting another one earning 1,810,000 LL. What should be done is sorting the salaries into ranges and giving a percentage for each range:
For example:
– 200,000 LL for people below 1,000,000
– 300,000 LL for people between 1,000,000 and 1,800,000 LL.
– 10% or 400,000 LL (depending which is higher) for people between 1,800,000 and 5,000,000
this is so wrong and useless because by ONLY doing this prices will get higher so this will make things even worse
they should reduce taxes on necessities such as foods… and “tanket el benzine” as a FIRST step THEN think about raises as a SECOND step (or parallel)
May i ask you please whether this decision covers someone who has been recently employed in the private sector and has been working so far for two months as i was told there was a law in lebanon that does not give employees the right to benefit from the raise if they have not completed at least one year at their job..(is this true?) and my other question whether the retired government employees are also included in the raise? thanks

Inflation!
Soon these raises wont be enough to cover the increase in prices!

inflation at its best 😉
and it is told that the minister of economy will watch the prices YEAH SURE!!! as if they did that before specially in 2008 salary raises
And Nagib what about the ones whose salary is above the 5 millions, no raise? 🙁
This is just so not fair! 😛
On a serious note, I’m so against this; the timing is really bad and this raise is not done based on a rational study!
I see lots of unemployment in the future.
I understand increasing the minimum wage. But 40%??? That’s outrageous. I concur with Michele that this will drive small business owners to lay off staff.
As for your suggestion to increase ALL wages across the board; Are you crazy? Why should the government be allowed to dictate wages everywhere?
Unemployment & inflation and senseless economical decisions! I can only smell electioneering in all the “moves” of this administration.
I heard the decision was reversed today, one day after it was issued.
Or the small business owners might give their employees a choice between staying with them on their current salary or becoming laid off which will force employees to stay on their current salaries as it would be very hard to land a new job
