Celebratory gunfire is a great threat to unaware individuals and houses as the falling bullets can ricochet off walls, break through glass windows and occasionally cause injuries or tragic deaths. The last victim is a 25 year old girl called Bayan Bibi, who was walking in Hamra on August 31st around 5:45 when a bullet hit her in the back.
She was “lucky” enough not to get killed, but such things should not happen and must be stopped.
I hope you get better soon Bayan.
Bayan’s memorable quote:
I never talked about the political situation, but it hits me and it hurts me.
It also happened a few months ago to a coworker of mine as he was leaving work in verdun and loading stuff in his car there was a Hasan Nasrallah speech and he got a bullet in his back from the gunfire celebrating the speech. He got rushed to the hospital and the police came and took a report of what happened and thats pretty much it.
I already know of two cases where the stray bullets crashed into rear car windows. Some (most) people don’t account for such things in their monthly budgets, and I’m not sure if insurance covers them.
Also, when they used to point at Achrafieh (now they point at Sunni areas, hence Hamra), I remember bullets entering the swimming pool in a sports club, and the life guard taking one in his neck. He was lucky it was just a flesh wound.
There should be a serious effort from their leaders to prevent their followers from doing that. And it’s not enough for the leader to tell them: “Please no firing guns guys”. Because it’s as if they were telling them to stop cheering and applauding, hence the audience will do it again to show even more support. There should be drastic steps.
How about banning gunfire altogether?
What was she doing walking around in Hamra street anyways; it’s her fault; of all the roads in Beirut why take this one?
What are you talking about? How is it her fault for walking around in Hamra. How dumb are you?
So lucky!
should celebrate with a couple of clips!
ban falling bouletz it hit peplz it hurt them
Did it occur to anyone that the guns that unleash the celebratory shots are the SAME ones used in inter-confessional fights? So banning these will eventually turn into banning all gunfire in Lebanon. Including “al sila7 li himayat al sila7″…. It’s the same guns people use both ways. And… Najib you also previously advocated the use of auto-defense (you mentioned neighborhood watches, etc…) as part of your post “Can We Prevent Further Bombings in Lebanon?” and guess what – these people will need to be armed to protect their neighborhood (with the same arms they use for celebratory shots). See? We cannot have it both ways sadly.
Tarek,
I did not advocate auto-defense just like that. I clearly stated neighborhood watched in accordance with the guidelines set by the official security forces.
Plus you may need arms but that’s not an excuse to fire in the air stupidly
Najib, once someone owns a firearm (no matter what caliber) how can you refrain him from being trigger happy? Ex: Yesterday there was a barrage of gunshots near my house. Reason: A marriage.
30 minutes later another barrage. Reason: The mother in law of the groom announced she was moving out of the house now that her son was married.
So “in accordance with official security forces” doesn’t mean much in practice… Sadly.
another victim is the concierge(natour) of our building who was hit by a stray bullit also on saturday afternoon. Luckily, he’s out of danger now but still in hospital.
