How can you dare compare Danielle Arbids’ movie to labakis’. I know that lebanese people are somehowe excited by labakis; may i call this “movies”, i’m not sure. Labaki is just a videoclip and advertising director, she is not a movie maker. It’s just bad tv, the has-been , old-fashion lebanese tv of our childhood… Her work promote and strengthen only turned-back lebanese clichés… just like an awful and out-of-date advertising for an unexisting lebanon promoted by some tourist-home oldies… Danielle Arbids’ movie is maybe fragile on some of his aspects but it’s a very stimulating movie about lebanese reality, about the feeling of Beirut, about paranoia. Cinema is foremost a matter of thrill and sensibility. It gives you the feeling of the complexity : complexity of the city, of political reality, of sexual attraction, of feelings. This needs abstraction, time and not literal plots or awful lebanese folklore like in Labakis’ movies… folklore is not cinema, it’s not culture it’s just the artefacts of poor of minds.
