Tonia Makary has made history as the first Lebanese woman to qualify for the Ironman World Championship. She achieved this remarkable milestone by competing in the Ironman Championship in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, where she secured a spot at the prestigious World Championship set to take place in Kona, Hawaii, on October 11, 2025.
Makary finished the race 11th in her division and 295th overall, with a total time of 12 hours, 38 minutes, and 44 seconds.
She began training for triathlons in May 2020, with her sights firmly set on Kona—the oldest and one of the most grueling triathlon races in the world. To earn a coveted spot at the Ironman World Championship, athletes must first complete an Ironman or Ironman 70.3 event and meet stringent qualification standards.
