The Syrian authorities announced today the arrest of Major General Ibrahim Huwaija, the former head of General Intelligence in Syria, who is accused of hundreds of assassinations during the Assad era, including overseeing the assassination of Kamal Jumblatt, the founder and leader of the Progressive Socialist Party in Lebanon.

On March 16 1977, Jumblatt was killed with his driver and a bodyguard on the road between Beirut and his family palace in the Druze Muslim village of Mukhtara. One report said that two cars were involved in the ambush, but another report said that three gunmen in an Iraqi-registered Pontiac sports car swerved in front of Jumblatt’s car and then opened fire, hitting the politician in the head and chest. Jumblatt’s bodyguards fired back and the report said that the Pontiac was later found abandoned, with the engine still running and with traces of blood inside the car. Huwaija held the rank of Captain in Air Force Intelligence when the assassination took place.

Justice has been served, even after almost five decades. Let’s hope the next to fall into the hands of the Syrian authorities will be Habib el Chartouni.
