As you all probably know by now, Our Education Minister decided to issue passing statements for all students who applied for official exams this year in order for them to continue with their academic plans and be able to enroll in universities. The minister also offered 48 hours to find alternatives before proceeding with the passing statements once and for all.
This basically means that all students passed their exams without any corrections made, which is unacceptable in my opinion, but probably the only plausible solution given that the teachers are still on strike and are refusing to correct the exams. Speaking of which, and even though they have every right to demand raises, I think the teachers are doing a big mistake by jeopardizing the students’ interests.
I think there are two alternative solutions that could be adopted:
1- Outsource the correction to private school teachers or some specialized group.
2- Public school teachers to pause their strike, correct the exams and resume it afterwards.
Where was this guy when we were doing the bac? 🙂 Sweet deal. Unfair, but sweet
For you second alternative: “2- Public school teachers to pause their strike, correct the exams and resume it afterwards.” I suggest you delete it and act like you never posted this.
The public school teachers and other private school teachers have been waiting for the official exams to force the ministry to take measurements….how shall they pause the strike, correct the exams, then go on with their strike ???!!!???
My humble opinion: The whole strike issue is worthless. Do they really want a rise ? Have they ever wondered what the prices would be like ?
Have the minister considered students that depend on a high score for financial aid ? ( although if I was waiting my results i would definitely rather a passing statement )
raise*
First choice, are the private school teachers eligible to correct these exams ?iAre they trained for it ?
And second choice would mean there was no strike in the first place .For them, the whole point of the strike is to rebel against the government by doing something against them ,like not correcting exams .If they pause and coreect ,the strike wouldnt have any meaning to it .
in fact,i think they will continue their strike even at the cost of students not being able to begin their academic year in Schools until their demands are met i suppose .I think this is the only way.
Passing students on the basis that no solution has been met yet, means that the government has failed to reach an agreement with the Union.
And unfortunately ,someone had to pay the price ,in this case ,students passing exams easily .
If I were a student who had been accepted to Harvard, per se, but couldn’t actually complete my application due to boycotting exam correction, I’d be really pissed.
I think the interests of the students are way above those of the teachers. The students are paying the teachers to teach, and the teachers’ job is to really look after the interests of their students, not the opposite.
I have a radical idea, this business of correcting exams like the old days is now obsolete in the West, at least for the majority of subjects such as Sciences, and even languages. I taught a course in a university in Washington with 200 students and my worst nightmare was correcting exams. We simply opted for multiple choice exams and used Scranton sheets for collecting answers and correcting exams. SAT and all other international exams are done this way at least during my days (probably now some are even administered online?), the government should solve this issue once and for all and follow suit.
My two cents
Your 2nd option makes no sense whatsoever. I suggest stick to what you know man. Trust me
That’s why they are going to implement it right? It makes a lot of sense.
You want the public teachers to suspend their strike ? Correct the exam then go back on strike? First of all, a strike means not working. Correcting the exam is their job at this point so suspending the strike to correct the exams then resuming it defies the logic behind the situation.
You mentioned that it is their right to get the raise? I am sorry that you are misinformed but these people are threatened by : no well fair, no retirement plan and most recently not getting payed at all.
These people are the core of our society if their demands were not right, they wouldn’t have hit a strike. You want to criticize someone or give advice, I would suggest you get informed about the current situation and where the problem lies.
Now that said, these tests are absolutely useless since they do not qualify you to enter a university thow required, that is about it. Universities take in consideration the EEE+SE exams or the SAT along with the grades from the last years of school and based on those decide if you fit in or not.
So there are no problem to begin with regarding the exams, the problem here is the hard working force that is miss treated and threatened to be left uncared for and without income.
Tony,
If you don’t have a paper that you completed your baccalaureate, you can’t apply to universities regardless of the grades. As far as the strike is concerned, they should taken into consideration the interests of the students before getting stuck where we are now.
As for their rights, I am totally against the salary raise that they r asking for all public workers. While the teachers may deserve it, the majority doesn’t and it doesnt make sense to give a raise to a bunch of useless government workers.
Anyway it seems like they will correct the exams.
You said well fare. The correct term I believe is welfare. You’re welcome.
Oh ye, Kareem, READ my post. 😉
Marz and Maya , good to know there are still people that can think for themselves tho I don’t agree with every point you have Marz. Teachers are the most important part of society after all they hold the draft for the future generations, an underpaid teacher will under work and the draft will be under standards and the society will hit bottom eventually ( that is what has been happening for about 20 years since the serian occupation). They targeted our educational systems and it worked. As if that wasn’t enough the amount of refugees almost illiterate that we harbored drove our systems levels down even more.
Lebanon used to have one of the best educational systems in the world , now it is struggling to get by.
Teachers are the corner stone of society and development. Value them , you evolve. Run them in the mud and eat ….. dirt.
