Update: The lecture has been cancelled. Here’s the [memo].
The Insight Club is hosting a public lecture on Thursday 23rd of March at the Issam Fares Lecture Hall – AUB (near AUBMC) at 5PM on “Homosexuality in Lebanon: the Challenges of Modernity”. The lecture will be hosted by two doctors and university professors who (wait for it) believe that homosexuality is an illness that can be cured using shock therapy.
After being criticized for hosting these doctors, the club responded through a memo that “the subject will be approached from an academic and scientific perspective” but I’m not really sure what perspective they’re talking about if their guest speakers believe homosexuality needs a cure and when the club puts the term homosexuality between quotes in its title.
To be honest, I couldn’t care less what the club or these doctors believe but I find it weird that AUB would approve of such a lecture that could send out a wrong message to young students and wrongly categorize the LGBT community at AUB and outside it. If anything, they should ask the club two doctors with different views on the topic to hold a constructive discussion, otherwise it’s pointless.
Nevertheless, I think the lecture should go on as is and students should show up and question these doctors and give them a hard time 😀
I’m sorry but no. It should not go on. The mere fact that the event was approved in the first place is an insult to every single person in the LGBT+ community.
And we live in the freaking 21st century, homosexuality should’nt even be subject to debate anymore.
