The Beirut blast investigation was dealt yet another blow this week after Judge Suleiman of the Court of Cassation suspended the arrests warrants issued against former ministers Youssef Fenianos, and Ali Hassan Khalil. Back in September 2021, Judge Tarek Bitar had issued warrants against Fenianos and Khalil and accused them of “intentional killing and negligence that led to the deaths of more than 200 people in the explosion”.
Is Suleiman’s decision legal?
It appears not as the attorney general should only executed decisions taken by the investigating judge, but then again who’s keeping track of what’s legal or not in a country ruled by mafias? Let’s not forget how all suspects in connection with the Beirut blast were illegally released by Beirut’s public prosecutor a year ago.
