I normally respect traffic laws and I’m not a reckless driver but I sometimes do check my phone when I’m stuck in traffic and the cars are not moving. I also don’t think it’s wrong to answer your phone (using speakers or ugly blue-tooth headsets) but I heard this is not even allowed in the new traffic law which doesn’t really make sense.
In all cases, I was driving from Adonis towards Kaslik last weekend and we were barely moving when I received a phone call that I had to take, so as I was about to pick up the phone and put it on speaker my wife notifies me that there’s a police officer on his bike passing right next to us, so I quickly gave her the phone hoping that he didn’t notice anything. As it turns out, there were two cops actually, the first one on the bike was texting or playing on his smartphone and the other was looking the other way. It’s definitely not the first time I spot cops breaking the law, but it would have been the first time that I am fined by a policeman breaking the law himself. I was wondering how I would have reacted to that if he truly had stopped me. Few hours later, I received the above picture via whatsapp.
Needless to say, we should still abide by the new traffic law and hope that everyone, including policemen and politicians, do the same. Things have improved drastically in the past couple of months but it’s still too early to judge success of this new law.
In Australia we also get finned for using our phones while driving even in stuck in traffic or at a red light
fine more then $250.00 AUD ! It is really strict here, I think it will take years for Police in Lebanon to develop a discipline after years of being lazy.
What’s the point though? What could possibly go wrong if you check ur phone on a red light?
It’s the same in Canada. You cannot have a GPS/Phone in your hand when the car’s engine is running in traffic (stopped or not).
You could use Bluetooth or your handset has to be fixed/mounted on the dash…
Najib; you could get distracted and not notice that the light has changed or let go off the brake etc…etc.
Yeah it kind of makes sense but then car kits should be banned and anything that distracts u including music 🙂
The biggest distraction usually is the beautiful bombshell sitting beside you. 😛
As a reformed traffic offender I should be saying there is a point other than revenue raising.
But I can’t bring myself to say that…
the car kit is also illegal ??!!!
when i get the go pro cam. hundreds of pics daily of policemen breaking the law will be available . i spot hundreds daily but I’m still slow in picking up the phone to get some photos.
I rly like the graffiti in front of the cop. super trippy
” I received a phone call that I had to take” is no excuse to break the law. You should find a place to park and then take/make your call. But it definitely doesn’t make sense to disallow handsfree/BT, that’s plainly stupid!
Agreed and I wasn’t justifying what I did. What I’m doing though is putting them on speaker now but it’s probably illegal as well
I don’t really see any improvements. In Saida, nothing has probably changed.
