According to Save Beirut Heritage, the Fouad Boutros highway project will destroy 28 heritage landmarks, endanger 30 more, and uproot thousands of meters of lush green spaces in the Ashrafieh, Hekmeh and Mar Mikhail neighborhoods.
Check out what will happen to the Mar Mikhail street if this project is implemented. If the picture is correct, it will practically destroy the Mar Mikhail street and its surrounding. You can check out the full study [Here] and more pictures and information [Here].
Everyone should be posting about this

Instead of building highways through residential neighborhoods; they should work on bettering the transportation through rehabilitating the rail system. Be that train or light rail to alleviate congestion.
I just wonder who has been in charge of building these so called highways or ill conceived “bridges” that have done nothing but exasperate the congestion and wreak havoc on daily commute.
Post?! How about a “movement”.. we still believe words will make things better..
Sorry I was replying to Habib. Your words or golden man
people are good at bashing the minister of telecom and jebran bassil as if there are NO other ministers in the government, what about the ministry of public transport ?? people are LITERALLY dying because of the roads!!
Stop complaining … we need new Roads …
What is next ? Complaining about a subway/train system in Beirut because few old houses with Ottoman architecture will be destroyed during construction ?
We need to stop living in the past
Jim,
What you need is better planning. No one is complaining. I am sure you’d be so happy to live in a concrete jungle and you’d be happier if a highway goes through your bedroom!!
Jim, we do “need new roads”, but we do NOT need additional ones, I am not going to elaborate on this cause it needs pages of explaining.
Meanwhile you can meditate on this: most people are unaware that when the Lebanese civil war “ended”, the first thing we did was repeal the Ministry of Planning (the only ministry you actually need after a war) and focused instead on “national reconciliation”. Today Beirut resembles at best a mix of fake Dubai with third world suburbs (it does) and as for the national reconciliation, well…:)
So there you have it, the otherwise righteous notion of “stop living in the past” and look forward to the future is completely flawed in principle and application in the Lebanese mind, and from your comment in yours as well. That being said, I agree that we need to stop complaining, after all it’s not the government’s fault ; it is ours.
interesting. When/why was ministry of planning removed? And when did we have “national reconciliation.” I haven’t seen any of it myself and surely we could use more!
As for complaining, I don’t know why we have this allergy toward raising our voices. We need to be having more not less discussion about the problems we face. The strategy of giving up has not got us very far.
Hello Habib, the Ministry of Planning was removed and replaced by Majliss Al Inma’ Wal ‘I3mar, a body which (i) does not report to the public as opposed to a ministry (ii) has its internal regulation no one really knows about and (iii) interestingly is directly controlled by… the Prime Minister ! (talk about abuse of power). I do not wish to start a political debate between followers and opponents of the then prime minister (anyway that position passed through both camps), but in pure objectivity this is a world premiere in republican governance and a typical breach to the principle of power separation.
After more than 20 years of “reconstruction” I think we all agree that this body has “done” a lousy job, if any,(just look outside your window. It is then pretty obvious its creation is financially-driven.
“National Reconciliation”, a government of “National Unity” etc… we still hear the same slogans and speeches. It does not and will not work, we have consistently failed at it for nearly 25 years. That’s because again we deviate the concept from its true purpose. By definition you cannot reconcile two diverging political opinions, we are the only country trying to do so! The left will remain the left and the right will remain the right, we need to accept that. The only thing you can unite people on is a decent living and mutual respect in the most basic things, that’s were the reconciliation is, but no one is working on that, and instead we want to do politics of 14 or 8.
I am sorry if I did not elaborate on the complaining part; to be more clear, go ahead and ask anyone on the street (anyone) “how’s the situation?” and you will get the same answer; no one is happy about it. Yet funnily enough, everyone will go vote at the next elections for the same 14ers or 8ers or “(not-so) independents”… so basically people complain but when it comes to really take action and make a difference they do nothing. Complaining is good only when followed by actions. Sorry for the long write-up.
Those houses are what Beriut really is .not some kind of cheap look alike version of Dubai. But anyway we can discuss forever nothing going to Change especially in a country Like Lebanon
