According to Elie Lahoud, head of “Youth against drugs” association, 5000 people die in Lebanon yearly because of smoking.
Percentages of people who smoke in Lebanon are very high, yet the solution is very simple and consists of increasing the very cheap price of cigarettes and secondly of banning it in public places.
i’m amazed the number is so low, to be honest. agreed that low cigarette prices are the first thing that need to be fixed… and since when is the govt not interested in extra tax income anyways??
Only 5,000? That has to be inaccurate.
The government couldn’t stop the herbal medicines people from advertising on TV. I doubt the cigarette mafia is going to allow them to do anything to curb smoking.
I also think there should be a program educating kids on the dangers of smoking and a law not allowing kids under the age of 18 (or 21) to buy cigarettes.
A research that recently has been conducted in lebanon, shows that 70% of smokers in Lebanon started smoking when they were between the ages of 14 and 17.
