Lebanon’s Maronite Christian Church inaugurated a towering, lighted cross Monday as a sign of unity among the world’s people.
The cross soars more than 73.8 meters (242.13 feet) into the air and is lit up with 1,800 spotlights in the mountain village of Qanat Bekish, according to Father Farid Doumit, a Maronite priest in the village.
Building the cross took about two years and cost some $1.5 million, which mainly came from donations from the Maronite Church and a French Catholic group. The cross stands near a church that dates to 1898. [Source]

1.5 millions??!! I mean what a waste; wouldn’t poor Christian families benefit from it more?
And who is going to pay for the electricity? Is it going from our taxes as well?

i really nice project, but money could’ve been invested on something that would benefit the community. its probably going to cost a fortune to keep it lit up with Lebanon’s outrageous electricity rates and inconsistent supply.

I understand such project in a country where all needs are provided, where they are confused what to do next, but here?????
couldn’t donations be forwarded to build a religious Community center, a cultural center for youth, a civilized public space where teens could spend quality time and benefit, none of these terms are familiar here…too bad
What a waste of money, instead of building something that looks so cheap, why don’t they get an amazing sculptor to make something that has some artistic merit? Then it could actually turn out to be a good touristic spot.
Honestly, considering the hundreds of millions Lebanese spill on elections and politics, i think 1.5 millions to build a huge cross is a great investment. At least its not ending in some politician or official’s pocket.
Apparently it’s not even the tallest cross … but the tallest lit up cross! I think $1.5 million could have be spent more wisely… Instead of trying to create a new touristic spot or a new biggest something I think it would have made more sense to provide that money to the needy…. or if you are to build something, ensure it creates jobs for those in needs.
