The new Lady Gaga song and her mention of Lebanese in the song seem to have stirred a debate on the Lady Gaga forum. I honestly think she doesn’t even have a clue about what it might mean. We are not talking about the deepest of singers here.
Some are saying that Lebanese are not discriminated against, but on the contrary are discriminators themselves.
Another comment thinks Lebanon is in Africa.

I degrees, sometime the apparent airhead seem to be the deepest artists…although in many cases that statement is actually wrong, but exceptions are very well evident through history, Chaplin,Madonna, Freddy Mercury, Tupac and other rappers, etc… they all seemed different than what they truly were as a person… and with Gaga everything she does however normal or eccentric has a purpose that she well understands and makes sense to her and those who understand her antics…
I agree with Ronman.
Lady Gaga isn’t as shallow as you may want to believe. I’m not a fan of hers, but she is intelligent and I’m sure she knows where Lebanon is. Everything she does, she does for a reason.
Check this out for an in-depth analysis of her, it’s actually pretty interesting.

i talked about it on my blog, and i think it might be that some politician has stupidly paid her so that she would mention lebanon to add the touristic rates 😛
Do you think she might mean the Lebanons that are in the USA instead?
Just a question, why wouldn’t she know what she’s singing about? I’m confused.
she probably used it because it rhymes, pretty cool even though i don’t really know what she’s trying to say, i almost choked on my lunch when i heard her saying “You’re Lebanese, you’re orient”.
No. Lebanese are Arabs. Arabs are brown in color. Lebanese/Syrians/Palestanians are arabs who are NOT brown in color. Most of them are white/blonde, but they cannot call themselves white because that refers to westerners or americans/europians’ “white people”, and they cannot refer to themselves as brown, because they are not brown physically. So we lebanese are just confused as of we’re white or brown or… You know just Lebanese 😀
Najib, maybe you should do your research before posting any offense regarding anyone. Lady Gaga studied the sociology of fame as a thesis for her high studies.
In addition to her five Grammy Awards, Lady Gaga has already won nine Billboard Music Awards, five World Music Awards, two People’s Choice Awards and 11 MTV Music Video Awards. A major presence in the world of social media, she is #1 on Twitter with more than eight million followers and has more than 28 million “likes†on Facebook.
and all that in just 2 years in the business.
she has written all of her songs, and composed each and everyone of them. and you call her not deep enough. be more professional people…
and regarding Born This Way, of course she didnt mean mentioning Lebanon in any offensive way: those whole song is about human impowerment and people coming together, im sure “lebanese” doesnt come in a bad way in the context, she mentions us only as a part of the middle east, along with “yellow, black, white, beige” etnicities. we dont fit in any of those categories, do we? 😉
Light me up put me on top, let’s
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la, la, la

Very deep indeed. She must be a genius for coming out with such deep lyrics. And by the way I never said she insulted us, I just said that she mentioned Lebanese in her song that’s all.
Najib:
Please read the link I posted. She might seem shallow, but she really isn’t.
Patrick,
I read and it’s indeed a very insightful essay on Gaga and shows a side not so well known to people, but then again how do you explain something like that Christmas song?
It somehow contradicts with the essay I just read and portrays the artist as shallow, awful and disrespectful.
Every “deep” musician has songs that can be classified as shallow – from the Beatles to whatever music anyone listens to.
Also sometimes some musicians are forced to write songs like that due to their contracts or whatever.
Najib, i understand your position. but yet again, it’s pop music we’re talking about here. how much deep do you expect a song to be? it’s not christian rock. and whether it’s disrespectful or not is a subjective matter. she mentions christmas as a holiday, and without blasphemy. remember this was not a released single and is before The Fame album era. anyhow i think we’re missing the point here.
Lady Gaga + Lebanon is the main topic now.
Agreed Patrick. I was just listening to born this way and it’s a really nice song come to think of it.
M,
The issue at point was whethere she has lyrics that make sense or it is complete B.S. While this song and others like Patrick explained have lots of hidden meanings, the Christmas song is a shameful pointless and stupid song.
She blasphemed everything there is about Christmas and u say she mentioned it as a holiday? Do you need me to explain the lyrics for you?
First of all, “Lebanese” is a word that rolls easily on the tongue and rhymes with the song. What is she supposed to say, JAPANESE? the “JA” is really harsh sounding.
Secondly, it’s just a shout out to the token Lebanese friends gaga went to school with in nyc.
The Lady Gaga song, Born This Way, is about her possibly being a lesbian or Bisexual and how a person cannot change that. Lebanon is the only Arabic country in the Middle East that is tolerant of Gays and Lesbians. That’s my guess. Any challengers?
I think she had a lebanese boyfriend. Just saying 🙂
Maybe its because the lebanese need that message :
DON’T BE A DRAG JUST BE A QUEEN !!!
u have an idea of how many gay guys/ lesbian women do we have in our community that are still in the closet??
Guys, you should probably read what came before the words ‘Lebanese’ before over-analyzing stuff.
“You’re black, white, beige, chola descent
You’re lebanese, you’re orient”
She means it as an example. Here in Lebanon, we have so many civilizations (black, white, all of the above).
I also agree with what Dani said.
I read all the posts and there’s lots of good points, but has anyone thought that she just said Lebanese just because she needs a word that refers to the middle eastern race and goes with her lyrics.
In the end, Middle Eastern is an ethnic group.
And nicely done for the one who said her ex was Lebanese, very creative :P.
I think that Lebanese in the lady gaga’s song means lesbian since the use of lebanese as lesbian has been a very old joke that Americans use to refer to lesbians for example in the golden girls episode and when ellen was on the rosie show and finally the hit show Glee , the latest episode titled” Born this way” is all about lady gaga’s song and how to accept oneself for who he/she is , the teacher gave his students an assignment which is to describe therselves in one word so a character gave her friend , who is a lesbian but not out yet , a shirt with the word lebanese on but actually it refers to lesbian.
my conclusion is that lady gaga used the term lebanese to refer to lesbian since first its not very appropiate to use lesbian in a song and that it does not really follow the beat or rythm and i think the proof is the lastest glee episode
lady Gaga + born this way + Lebanese+ Lesbian Charatcter

Realize that the use of lebanese as lesbian has beeen there for years
I think that Lady Gaga has her favorite song writer Nadir Khayat from Lebanon who wrote Bad Romance and many other songs for her. Actually she wanted to interpret Arabs as general but she mentioned the Lebanese alone, maybe the only country she knew from ME is Lebanon, or maybe she thinks that alone Lebanon listens her songs in Middle East. God Knows! But one thing is clear that she wanted to mention Arabs here. She wants to tell the people that whosoever you’re just be what you’re, don’t become negative if some people mock you for who you’re. There are two sides of everyone’s personality and she says pick the positive one. As she says in the song’s lyrics;
“Don’t be a drag, just be a queen
Whether you’re broke or evergreen
You’re black, white, beige, chola descent
You’re Lebanese, you’re orient”
