This footage was shared today on طلعت ريحتكم’s Facebook page prior to their “Final Warning” demonstration on Saturday at 4pm. Lebanon’s trash collection crisis is now in its eight month with still no resolution in sight.
The footage is quite scary and shows the severity of the garbage crisis in Lebanon, yet I believe spreading it online is more efficient than planning demonstrations at this point. Moreover, I think activists should focus more on encouraging recycling initiatives all over Lebanon and work with NGOs to raise awareness and implement solutions. A lot of municipalities have already begun recycling and it’s going great for them.
On another note, I don’t think YouStink should have linked the video below to the “Rise Above Lebanon” tourism video because despite everything that’s happening, there’s nothing wrong in showcasing the beauty of our country and we should stay supportive of such positive initiatives.
YouStink’s demo is on Saturday at 4 pm at Sassine Square for those who want to join.

Sir,
Every country in the world has areas that are stunning. Lebanon has a few but unfortunately in this age of instant verification; we can see the warts all over Lebanon. The beauty marks are not visible.
You need to showcase that to some lost souls (my family) who are coming to Lebanon to visit even though except for my brother out of eight are Canadian borne.
Keep up the fight; however there’s a fine line between hallucinating and dreaming in technicolor. 😀
I don’t see what’s wrong with linking it to the Ministry of Tourism’s video. If anything, this video is a better representation of what Lebanon is all about. It’s part of our daily lives to see garbage stacked on the sides of the road. Our politicians are beyond greedy. Embezzlement of public funds. The only place the army should be is at the borders, not erecting checkpoints every few kilometers. Laws are not implemented, and even politicians and officers break the law on a daily basis. War lords control this country. Blackouts have become the norm. The government couldn’t care less about its own people. They should include stuff like this into their videos if they accurately want to represent what Lebanon is actually about: a failed state.
I understand where you’re coming from and wish that I could be as optimistic as you are, but the Ministry of Tourism’s videos are in no way whatsoever a representation of what Lebanon is about. They are nothing but a lie. A pill to make you momentarily forget about this shithole we live in; “the opium of the masses.”
4 am at Sassine Square? Good luck getting the people to wake up 🙂
Hey Najib,
For once, I don’t agree with you 😉 Your nuanced analysis about the usage of this film would have made sense a couple of months ago. But today, the situation is simply a disaster, and any action or demonstration on the ground should be welcome. Otherwise, we will soon be eating our own garbage. Literally.
Cheers and I hope to see you on Saturday.
