Instead of tackling homosexuality in Lebanon in an objective and scientific matter, OTV decided to promote the show by asking whether homosexuality is a fashion trend or an illness. In order to be fair, I did bother and watch the show and while the doctors and Pierre Bou Saab were mostly spot on and made sense, the host kept asking the wrong questions and making wrong assumptions and over-generalizing.
Homosexuality is not a trend nor an illness and people don’t choose to become gay. While people are affected by environmental and social factors, almost everyone agrees that sexual orientation has nothing to do with choice, and even if it did, no one is entitled to judge others based on that or call it an illness. Moreover, I don’t know why she assumed that more Lebanese recently are rejecting this “weird phenomenon” as she calls it. There aren’t any studies or surveys to prove that and if that’s the case, awareness is much needed then. We shouldn’t portray gay people as being different or weird and we should help them in their struggle against ignorance and hatred.
On another note, the host didn’t even know what LGBT stands for and thought it was a cool term gay people use nowadays. She also said biosexual instead of bisexual in the first part (Between Minute 3:20 and 3:35) and the doctor corrected her. I’m glad she didn’t bring any religious people but the show didn’t send out the right message and promoting it the way they did was a bad move.
Here’s the [first part] for those interested in watching.
Homosexuality is considered a mental illenes only when its ego-dystonic, which means the individual isnt happy/doesnt accept his preference. And i guess you might see this more in cultures that dont accept homosexuality.
And what did u expect from OTV?
Great post. LGBT community you have many CIVILIZED, RATIONAL, LOVING people’s support. And that woman is such an idiot.
“At what age did you choose not to be gay?” – John Stewart
“You don’t choose to be gay”
First time I’ve seen such a statement.

You just come from a conservative society based on religious virtues which is fine. You’ll never change your mind unless you truly decide to change your self and give up all the things you’ve been taught.
Or, you could continue to be conservative but decide to be “educated” and knowledgeable about other societies, other “valid” point of views and other proven beliefs by basing your opinions on facts and a lot of research.
By basing your opinion on religious teachings, you’ll be blindly accepting what you’ve been taught and never be open to “learning”.
I’m not against gay people. It’s just that your statement that they don’t choose to be gay is somewhat degrading for them, in my opinion. It’s like you’re saying “Yi look at them…mish bi 2eedon l 2ossa.” Sure, biological/genetic factors are involved in almost every human behavior, but one has the ability to take one’s own conscious decisions. I’m not even near being religious or conservative. I’m not even saying that because they choose to be gay, it’s their fault that they’re gay. There’s nothing to blame them for really even if they do choose to be gay. It’s their life and they’re free to do whatever they want.
I respect your opinion, but I am entitled to mine.
So before you go on acusing people of being conservative and to go educate themselves, please try to learn that your opinion is not that which counts. This issue of free will vs determinism is a whole debate in psychology. There is no wrong or right answer. You hold onto your belief like it’s the absolute truth. You are what Nietzsche would call a “slave.”
Good day.
Ignorance at its best ,isn’t it funny that ignorance is so Loud in this country
It’s really unfortunate, they’re not even close to reflecting the reality of our situations here, LGBT members are more or less comfortable in Lebanon, there is a certain level of awareness these days that these shows ignore and refuse to put out there. It’s like 2a7mar bel khatt l 3arid, they get the worst possible take on things and put it on national television to breed more ignorance. Truly an unfortunate situation, the woman on the show tackles the issue in a very aggressive and idiotic way, stressing on the fact that she wants to uncover the reasons behind sexuality, it’s dumb and what’s really hard to believe is that the Lebanese population is eating this shit up. ignorants breeding ignorance.
One question to those heterosexuals who think being gay is a choice, if that is the case, do you feel that you had homosexual tendencies but then made a conscious decision to live a heterosexual lifestyle instead?
In other words, when did you decide to be ” straight” ?
