I am not a big fan of Le Chef and always wondered what makes tourists want to go eat there, specially that the place feels dirty.
I am glad they finally decided to renovate after almost 30 years.

It’s a dump but it’s cheap. One of those places that gets mentioned by all the expats precisely because it is cheap.
It’s strange but it always seems to be frequented entirely by foreigners (yes, some locals eat there too)who like to think they are eating the authentic way. I know some expats who, despite their well-paid jobs here insist on eating there when there are so many other better (and comparably cheap) places.
It remains to be seen if it will still keep its cult status after the renovation – unless of course they are going to make it look even grungier…
The first time I ate there (a long while ago) I complained that the bread on my table in the little plastic bag had ants in it. The waiter came over, opened the bag and took the bread out, brushed the ants off and put the bread back in the bag without saying a word – an absolute classic!
