I must say i was wrong to underestimate the impact of those new radars installed by the ISF on the Lebanese drivers. They are so far way more efficient than random checkpoints and are resulting in a safer and more controlled driving, to a certain extent of course.
I still believe radars should not be kept as secret so that people get used to them and that some speed limits should be reconsidered, but driving on the highway is becoming more and more pleasant and few accidents are happening as a result.
The Trapster should not be banned as there is nothing wrong in taking extra precaution when knowing that a radar is nearby. After all, those radars were set to slow down Lebanese drivers, and not just fine them for the sake of it.
So in all, i must applaud Minister Ziad Baroud for this initiative and hope that he will follow it thoroughly and steadily, because it’s proving to be highly efficient and that’s not something you get that easily in Lebanon.
I really don’t understand why so many people disagree with the secrecy of the radars. Here in the States, many police vehicles are fitted with radars and they hide at curves and behind bushes and trees. As far as I can see, and maybe this thought process is a bi-product of the fact that it’s part of my everyday life, I see no problem with the secrecy . . . if there’s a speed limit and if driving above that speed limit is illegal, then how else are you going to catch people in the act of breaking the law? If you outright publish all locations, then of course people are going to slow down in those areas, this way, people are FORCED to respect the law.
I just wish people would get over themselves and realize they’re not above the law.
I must agree with the above post. If anything, keeping the locations secret is far more efficient than broadcasting it for the simple reason that if I knew where all the radars were I’d only slow down in these specific locations, but since I don’t, I slow down all the time, thinking there “might” be a radar here! Whoever writes this blog, maybe you haven’t seen how the real world functions. (Its not about the money stealing, sorry)
keeping the location of the radars a secret is not only important for keeping people vigilant and within speed limit at all times, but also to protect the radars. Im pretty sure there will be a lot of replacing of those radars happening in the future due to sabotage and stealing.
Keeping them secret does not make sense inany places because of the absurd speed limits set there … Meaning that if there s a sign that says 30 and the radar Is set to 50 I want to know because 30 is really fucked up
Najib radar locations are not kept a secret, they are mobile radars so their locations are not the same every time so thats why there isn’t a list of radar locations. They are also not hidden since the radar cars are parked out in the open on the side of the road. They also flash every time you get caught speeding so you are aware of it. If they wanted to be hidden and secretive they would have used black flash (infrared) and take your picture in the dark without you even knowing. There are signs warning you ahead of time if a road is monitor by radar or not. Thats how it is in the majority of developed countries.
Trapster also isn’t banned in Lebanon because you can’t fucking ban an app. Do you really think cops are going to set up a check point and check all phones to see if they have Trapster installed or not? Seriously? Not sure who your friend is who told you its banned but its just a dumb rumor.
it depends, I am lately paying attention to speed signs on the highway from jounieh heading to beirut in the stretch opposite to Le Royal they have a sign on the Highway that says 80 and after 50 meter there is another sign that says 100…Wait What which one should i go with….On the ring facing the UN there is a sign that says 30 can you imagine going 30 on the main beirut ring….now what is that? One more thing is that the speed limit on the highway is 100 not 80 yet nobody goes above 85…if i auto cruise on 100 i end up doing “betweens” something i avoided before…
Devin if a sign says 80 and then after that it says 100 it basically means you can now increase your speed from 80 to 100. That’s like Driving 101.
Mark,
I am sure you are being sarcastic, the two signs are on the highway after each other, by the time i hit the brake to drop from 100 to 80 (along the info that the highway is 100) I see another sign that says 100 (i will try to take a picture on monday)
theres supposed to be “une marge” of 20km/h… so if the speed limit is 80, the radar wont catch u unless ure going over 100. but then again, its lebanon… so u never know
Devin: I wasn’t being sarcastic. These signs can come after each other either increasing or decreasing in speed. Usually it increases when highway becomes clear and decreases when there is a lane merging into the highway. Like I said Driving 101…
Mark,
You might be right but in most places they are set to fine you. For example, if you are going down to NDU from Jeita, at the end of the fast down hill there’s a 30 speed limit which if u respect can cause accidents ( that is if you notice it).
same for the Matn Highway, its a 100 km/h road with a small right at the end of it where u should go down to 40.
There are a lot of speed signs to adjust, and this should have been done before they had put the speed radars.
For those of you wanting to know where radars have been spotted and want to post them on ur trapster:
Radar spotted near ABC Dbayeh on the bridge leading to Naccache.
-Radar spotted near on autostrad Al Naher near MTC bldg.
-Radar spotted exactly facing Burj al Ghazal on the other side.
-Radar spotted at Saint Georges Harriri spot.
-Radar spotted at the highway from Ouzaii coming to Unesco.
-Radar spotted at Ramleh el bayda highway.
-Radar spotted at tarik al mattar new highway.
-Radar spotted at MatHaf highway.
-Radar spotted at hazmieh new highway facing alfa.
-Radar spotted at old nahr highway facing peugeot.
You need to add in front of the Red Line building after ABC Debayeh
I have to agree with Devin, if you notice the speed limit signs properly, the old ones with higher speed limits are bigger then the new ones placed in inconspicuous places. This is highly noticeable when you head up to Faqra. Along the whole road you have new 60 limit signs almost half size (midget posts?!?!), once in a while you will find an 80 speed sign just meters after or before the 60 new sign. Now I don’t recall driving 101 mentioning anything about that, second, please go up for a boring drive to Faqra to find out how ridiculous the speed limit is, I am sure people will start dozing of the road or onto the opposite lane, that is how boring and senile it is. What do you do when you are stuck behind an army truck that is spewing tons of black smoke from the exhaust and is being trailed by more than 10 cars all afraid to pass the truck and sucking all the fumes, answer that. How do you give a ticket to high overspeeding concrete mixers with dirty plates or trailer trucks or the like driving as if they are Schumacher in a Formula Car. How do you answer minister bodyguards driving like maniacs in blacked out cars holding the same number as the other maniac in front of him treating people on the road like dirt, tell me you have not experienced that.
